Railways of Hampshire(British Railway Pictorial)
Ian Allan | 2006 | ISBN: 0711031649 | 84 Pages | PDF | 80 MB

The railway scene in the county of Hampshire was dominated by the lines of the former London & South Western Railway, whose main routes to Portsmouth Southampton and Exeter all passed through the county. The LSWR also operated several secondary routes, such as the line from Alton to Winchester (now partly preserved as the Watercress Line) and branches, such as those to Bordon and Bishop Waltham. Other company's lines also served the county. These included the southernmost extremity of the Midland & South Western Junction Railway which terminated at Andover, the GWR-owned Didcot, Newbury & Southampton Railway, the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway's line along the south coast which served Portsmouth and a famous branch crossing over to Hayling Island. These incursions into LSWR territory provided a variety of train operation which lasted well into the British Railways era.
